The review queue

The transactions the engine refused to guess at, and why answering one fixes many.

These are the transactions the categorization engine would not guess at. It could have picked something plausible — it deliberately does not, because a plausible wrong category on a tax return is worse than an obvious gap.

Answering is teaching

When you answer a question, the app writes a rule and re-applies it everywhere: the same merchant in other months, other accounts, and other years. One answer usually clears a group.

That is also why the questions are grouped rather than listed one by one. A group is one decision, not twelve.

Two things that look the same and are not

  • Awaiting an answer — money whose category is not decided yet. It appears on no line of your return.
  • Unmapped — money whose category has no FBR field mapped to it. The category is decided; the form line is not.

The worksheet keeps these apart, because the fix for each is completely different.

Your answers are not overwritten

Re-categorization never touches a row you set by hand. A later rule change cannot overwrite a human's answer.
